With summer not too far off, there’s a good chance you’re looking to do all you can to get the most out of your garden this year. It is, after all, one of our best escapes from the COVID pandemic keeping us all stuck at home.
Whether you’re looking for a way to keep your plants happy and thriving, or are more interested in preparing for party hosting, we have plenty of helpful tips for you below.
Take a look at our seven tips for getting your garden ready for summer.
1. Always Kick off With a Clean
The best thing you can do for your garden after a long, cold, and dreary winter is to give it the biggest clean of the year. This goes beyond just your own items and restyling, of course, and extends through to weeding, removing dead plants, and really getting the garden looking as good as new.
You might want to consider pulling a few old plants, or plants that you no longer enjoy the look of and go from there.
To end, giving hedges and trees a good prune is also something to consider that will really make the place look well-kept and inviting for yourself and your guests.
2. Nutrients Are an Essential
Our second tip here is to make sure that you’re getting as many nutrients into the soil as you can prior to summer coming around.
As we all know, summer weather can be a little harsh on our plants, and so you want to give them the best chance of survival by making sure they have everything they need to grow happily and healthily.
Whether it’s manure or fertilizer from a store, get this into the soil as soon as possible and water it down – your plants will thank you immediately.
3. Start Watering on a Schedule
With winter leaving us behind, it’s time to get watering as soon as you can.
As the heat arrives and the ground begins to dry out, you run the risk of killing off all of your plants and the lawn too, and if you’re new to a home with a yard, you’ll thank us later for this tip!
Either set up your automatic sprinkler system to routinely water the yard or set yourself a reminder to do it as often as possible.
4. Mulch Over the Beds
As you would have noticed during the garden clean, there may have been a fair few weeds to pull, and so we say get on top of these early.
Invest in some mulch from a local hardware store and work to lay this down over the garden beds and around your plants to strangle out any weeds before they begin to take over your garden and all of your plants!
You can also use your yard trimmings for this too, just be sure that there aren’t any major weeds present in the yard before tipping these clipping into the garden.
5. Get Ready to Party
Whether you’re a party thrower or just a casual dinner hoster, now is the time to plan out your new eating areas – and that means dining spaces.
Consider weather-proof furniture from brands like Remarkable Furniture and you’ll be on your way to stylish, multi-use pieces that you can use for everything from hosting dinners, getting some work done in the yard, or just about anything else.
6. Consider a New Focal Point
If you’re like us, we enjoy changing our backyard’s focal point each summer and this means adding or taking away a new feature item.
For this, we ask you to consider your home’s style and your yard’s size and going from there. You may want to consider a birdbath, a fire pit, a seating pit, or even a pool or pergola to kick off the summer.
Whatever you choose, however, make sure it doesn’t take up too much space in the yard and take away usable living area.
7. Plant Your Veggies and Fruits!
To our final tip, get planting!
All of those summer vegetables and fruits need to be planted as soon as possible, and so get these into the ground before the summer and they will be ready to crop up right in time for your summer parties and get-togethers.
Whether it’s something like watermelon or any of your other favorite fruits, get these into your newly laid garden beds sooner rather than later.
