First, you need to blow up a balloon, and for this step, you need to be careful. If you want a perfectly round shape, then you need to blow up the balloon at a decent size. Because if you blow up the balloon too large, then the shape will be oval. But if you want a different and unique shape, then feel free to do it with your way.

After you get the right size of the balloon, then draw a circle around the knot of the balloon. This will allow you to put a light source inside the lantern.

Use string and tie it between two poles, trees or whatever you can find to help you suspend the balloon.

Mix glue and corn starch with warm water until the mixture is smooth.

Coat the balloon with petroleum jelly.

Then, coat the yarn with a mixture of glue and corn starch. After that, drape the yarn around the balloon.

For the wrapping, first, start vertically or horizontally if you prefer this way. Then gradually switch the wrapping from horizontal to vertical or vice versa. You also need to remember to wrap the yarn not too tight but also not too loose. If you are done wrapping, then tuck the end and the beginning under other pieces of yarn.

Let it dry for 24 hours. After that, pop the balloon and remove any crystals glue that is formed in between the string.

Finally, spray the ball with spray paint. You can try to paint it with different color depending on the purpose.

And now, the string lanterns are ready to decorate and light up your rooms or garden.
